A couple of my students used these tutorials and produced some great work.

The image based one is exemplified by http://www.zinapp.com/home/

We used this on the back on the 2012 student magazine http://testzone.net.au/magazine2012/#back

The GPS based one is exemplified by the http://www.rtbg.tas.gov.au/?base=3328. The example creates virtual dinosaurs in real botanic parks.

But there are many different tools that you can use to create AR.

These include:

Another AR development approach http://argon.gatech.edu/

Particularly like the integration with Google Earth. For example how to position ballons in the world.

Has google open domain documentation and development tools.
